COSIA Addresses Serious Concerns over GST Data Leaks

In a troubling development, the business community in Ludhiana, Punjab, has raised serious concerns regarding allegations that sensitive sales and purchase data of assesses is being sold by employees of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) department. This issue, which has also echoed in Maharashtra, poses a significant threat to the integrity and trust that supports the GST framework in India.

The alarming claims, reported in a recent article by The Tribune on 1st October, 2024, suggest a breach of confidentiality that could severely undermine the competitive landscape for businesses. This revelation has left many entrepreneurs feeling vulnerable and questioning the security of their sensitive financial information.

In response to these grave allegations, COSIA  has formally reached out to Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, Hon’ble Finance Minister of India, urging for a comprehensive investigation by both Central and State GST authorities. The representation highlights the necessity of stringent action against any personnel found complicit in these unethical activities to preserve the credibility of GST offices across the nation.

To further safeguard against such breaches, COSIA recommends the inspection of GST offices nationwide, along with the implementation of robust measures to monitor the handling of sensitive data by department officers. Such proactive steps are essential to prevent future transgressions and restore confidence among the business community.
